Equating Sugambri with Sicambri is risky because of the legend of the Trojan origin of the Franks mentioned in the Liber Historiae Francorum; according to that legend written in 727 AD, the Franks came from "Sicambria" a fictitious country along the Danube river.

Wallace-Hadrill in "The Long-Haired Kings" equates the two words however...


When Clovis was baptised by St. Remigius, the latter referred to him literally as a "Sicamber." At least that is the way that this quote has come down to us.

That's right. It probably comes from the fact that both words "Sicambri" and "Sugambri" have been used in Latin to name the same German tribe.
